Competitions are raining down thick and fast here at The Gourmet Forager, and this one enviably good. Want the chance to win an exclusive, intimate Masterclass with none other than Peter Gilmore of Quay Restaurant, Sydney? Ah, I thought that might get your attention…
The Electrolux Appetite for Excellence program was founded in 2005 by Luke Mangan, who of course is the Chef and owner behind many award winning restaurants including Glass Brasserie at the Sydney Hilton; and Lucy Allon the front of house manager successfully managing Luke’s three restaurants from 1999 – 2006. These awards were established as Luke and Lucy realised the hospitality industry needed to support, foster and recognise the next generation of talent. Since then the awards have run annually and have lauded stellar young chefs, waiters and restaurateurs in Australia and provided prizes and opportunities to gain experience from world renowned Chef mentors, restaurants and events.
The 2011 contestants competed in a range of hospitality challenges to prove their culinary skills including mystery box cook offs, customer service tests, food and wine knowledge tests and one-on-one interviews, all under careful scrutiny from a judging panel comprised of Australia’s leading chefs and hospitality leaders including Peter Gilmore. The winners and runners up were announced in early August this year with the winners for each category being:
- 2011 Electrolux Young Chef Winner: Richard Ousby, of Quay
- 2011 Electrolux Young Waiter Winner: James Sexton, of Sepia
- 2011 Electrolux Young Restaurateur Winner: Clint Hillery, of Time to Vino
However, not all the awards have been decided, as this year for the first time, there will be a People Choice Award for the Young Chef of the Year 2011. To decide the winner, videos have been released showing all of the 2011 Young Chef finalists giving it their all during the cook off stages of this year’s competition. The most intriguing part for me was getting a rare glimpse into how these professional master chefs get judged and doing the judging were some familiar famous faces wearing uncharacteristic serious, po expressions and gripping equally serious-looking drab brown clipbpoards – all with nary a tear, wild gesticulation or dramatic commercial break in sight.
To celebrate, thanks to Electrolux Appetite for Excellence Awards, one lucky Gourmet Forager reader will have the chance to win 2 places (for you and your guest) at that exclusive intimate masterclass with Peter Gilmore, executive Chef of the 3-hatted Quay, and the highest ranked Australian restaurant in this year’s San Pellegrino’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants coming in at number 26 in the list.
And the prize includes flights, transfers and accommodation to boot!
Yes… Enviably good as I said earlier, because this prize is for Gourmet Forager readers – not the Forager. The Forager is turning a vivid shade of green now (and envy has messed with her head as she is oddly referring to herself in third person). *Ahem*
So! All you have to do to be in the chance to win is
- Head to (or click on) the competition page link here: www.electrolux.com.au/EAFE2011
- Watch the videos and fill out the entry form and
- Indicate that you’re entering as a Gourmet Forager reader. Easy!
A select group of other bloggers will also be running the competition, but as each blog only have 2 spots to give away, it’s important you indicate which blog you’re entering under. But quick – you have just under 2 weeks to enter the competition and entries close on the 12th of September! The Masterclass itself will be held in Sydney on the 10th of October and all competition terms and conditions are on the entry page.
Good Luck and remember – you’ve got to be in it to win it!
Edit: Competition close date now extended to 19th September – hooray! One more week for you to get your entry in!
Update: The competition has closed and the winner has been drawn! Congratulations to C. Daniels for his winning entry – you’ll be contacted about the prize shortly.
